3 Chiropractic Tips to Help Your Child Start the School Year Strong
It’s hard to believe summer is coming to an end and another school year is just around the corner! As families in Decatur prepare for busy school mornings, sports practices, homework, and everything else that comes with a new school year, it’s a great time to think about your child’s posture and spinal health.
Students spend a lot of time carrying backpacks, sitting at desks, reading, and using tablets or computers. Developing a few healthy habits now can help your child stay comfortable and active throughout the school year.
At Decatur Back & Neck Center, we believe good spinal health starts with everyday habits. Here are three simple chiropractic tips to help your student have a healthier school year.
1. Make Sure Your Child Wears Their Backpack Properly
Backpacks are a part of every student’s daily routine, but an improperly worn or overloaded backpack can put unnecessary stress on the back, shoulders, and neck.
Although carrying a backpack over one shoulder may seem convenient or “cool,” it can place uneven strain on the body. Encourage your child to use both shoulder straps and adjust them so the backpack fits comfortably and securely.
A few backpack tips to keep in mind:
- Use both shoulder straps.
- Adjust the straps so the backpack sits comfortably against the back.
- Keep the backpack from hanging too far below the waist.
- Choose a backpack with comfortable, supportive straps.
- Avoid carrying unnecessary books and items.
- Keep the backpack as light as reasonably possible.
A backpack that is too heavy may cause your child to lean forward or change their posture to compensate for the additional weight.
Parents: If your child regularly complains about back, neck, or shoulder discomfort after carrying their backpack, it would be worth having their posture and spinal health evaluated.
2. Encourage Better Posture When Using Tablets and Books
Technology has become an important part of education, but spending long periods looking down at a tablet, laptop, or phone can encourage poor posture.
You may notice your child sitting with their head tilted forward, shoulders rounded, and back slouched while doing homework. Over time, these positions can contribute to neck, shoulder, and upper-back discomfort.
Help your child develop better habits by encouraging them to:
- Keep books and tablets closer to eye level.
- Use a stand for tablets when possible.
- Avoid holding devices in their lap for extended periods.
- Keep their head positioned over their shoulders.
- Take regular breaks from screens.
- Get up, move around, and stretch periodically.
Small changes throughout the school day can make a big difference in how your child feels by the end of the day.
3. Teach Your Child Good Sitting Posture
Students can spend hours sitting at school, doing homework, and using computers. That makes proper sitting posture especially important.
When your child is sitting at a desk, encourage them to:
- Keep both feet flat on the floor.
- Keep their shoulders relaxed rather than rounded forward.
- Keep their head positioned over their shoulders.
- Keep their back supported by the chair.
- Position books, tablets, and screens closer to eye level.
- Take movement breaks instead of sitting in the same position for hours.
It’s easy for students to gradually start slouching as they become tired or focused on their schoolwork. Reminding them to sit tall and change positions throughout the day can help them develop healthier habits.
And remember: good posture doesn’t mean sitting perfectly still all day. Regular movement is important, too. Encourage your child to stand up, walk around, and do some gentle stretches throughout the day.
A Healthy School Year Starts With Healthy Habits
Between backpacks, desks, computers, sports, and extracurricular activities, your child’s body has a lot to handle during the school year.
Simple habits like wearing a backpack correctly, practicing good posture, and taking regular movement breaks can help support your child’s overall comfort and wellness.
